Jonah 4:8-10
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
8
And when the sun came up God designated a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint, and he begged with
all
his soul to die, saying, 'Death is better to me than life!'
9
But God said to Jonah, 'Do you have a good reason to be angry about the plant?' And he said, 'I have good reason to be angry,
even
to the point of death!'
10
Then the
Lord
said, 'You had compassion on the plant, for which you did not work and
which
you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight.
King James Version
Chapter 4
8
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
9
And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
10
Then said the
Lord
, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 4
8
As the sun was rising, God appointed a scorching east wind. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head so much that he almost fainted, and he wanted to die. He said, "It’s better for me to die than to live."
9
Then God asked Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?" "Yes, it’s right!" he replied. "I’m angry enough to die!"
10
So the
Lord
said, "You cared about the plant, which you did not labor over and did not grow. It appeared in a night and perished in a night.
New Living Translation
Chapter 4
8
And as the sun grew hot, God arranged for a scorching east wind to blow on Jonah. The sun beat down on his head until he grew faint and wished to die. 'Death is certainly better than living like this!' he exclaimed.
9
Then God said to Jonah, 'Is it right for you to be angry because the plant died?' 'Yes,' Jonah retorted, 'even angry enough to die!'
10
Then the
Lord
said, 'You feel sorry about the plant, though you did nothing to put it there. It came quickly and died quickly.
