Chapter 1

9So he said to them, 'I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land.'
10Then the men became extremely afraid, and they said to him, 'How could you do this?' For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11So they said to him, 'What should we do to you so that the sea will become calm for us?'—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. 12And he said to them, 'Pick me up and hurl me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you.'

For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. 12And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

10Then the men were seized by a great fear and said to him, "What is this you’ve done?" The men knew he was fleeing from the Lord’s presence because he had told them. 11So they said to him, "What should we do to you so that the sea will calm down for us?" For the sea was getting worse and worse.
12He answered them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea so that it will calm down for you, for I know that I’m to blame for this great storm that is against you."

10The sailors were terrified when they heard this, for he had already told them he was running away from the Lord. 'Oh, why did you do it?' they groaned. 11And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him, 'What should we do to you to stop this storm?'
12Throw me into the sea,' Jonah said, 'and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.'
