Chapter 1

2Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it, because their wickedness has come up before Me.' 3But Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship that was going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and boarded it to go with them to Tarshish away from the presence of the Lord.
4However, the Lord hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea, so that the ship was about to break up.

He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the Lord’s presence.
4But the Lord threw a great wind onto the sea, and such a great storm arose on the sea that the ship threatened to break apart.

2Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.'
3But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.
4But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart.
