Jeremiah 31:7-20
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 31
7
For this is what the
Lord
says:
'Sing aloud with joy for Jacob,
And be joyful with the chief of the nations;
Proclaim, give praise, and say,
‘
Lord
, save Your people,
The remnant of Israel!’
8
Behold, I am bringing them from the north country,
And I will gather them from the remote parts of the earth,
Among them those who are blind and those who limp,
The pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together;
They will return here as a great assembly.
9
They will come with weeping,
And by pleading I will bring them;
I will lead them by streams of waters,
On a straight path on which they will not stumble;
For I am a father to Israel,
And Ephraim is My firstborn.'
10
Hear the word of the
Lord
, you nations,
And declare
it
in the coastlands far away,
And say, 'He who scattered Israel will gather him,
And He will keep him as a shepherd
keeps
his flock.'
11
For the
Lord
has ransomed Jacob
And redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he.
12
'They will come and shout for joy on the height of Zion,
And they will be radiant over the bounty of the
Lord
—
Over the grain, the new wine, the oil,
And over the young of the flock and the herd.
And their life will be like a watered garden,
And they will never languish again.
13
Then the virgin will rejoice in the dance,
And the young men and the old together;
For I will turn their mourning into joy
And comfort them, and give them joy for their sorrow.
14
I will refresh the soul of the priests with abundance,
And My people will be satisfied with My goodness,' declares the
Lord
.
15
This is what the
Lord
says:
'A voice is heard in Ramah,
Lamenting
and
bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
She refuses to be comforted for her children,
Because they are no more.'
16
This is what the
Lord
says:
'Restrain your voice from weeping
And your eyes from tears;
For your work will be rewarded,' declares the
Lord
,
'And they will return from the land of the enemy.
17
There is hope for your future,' declares the
Lord
,
'And
your
children will return to their own territory.
18
I have certainly heard Ephraim grieving,
‘You have disciplined me, and I was corrected,
Like an untrained calf;
Bring me back that I may be restored,
For You are the
Lord
my God.
19
For after I turned back, I repented;
And after I was instructed, I slapped
my
thigh;
I was ashamed and also humiliated
Because I bore the shame of my youth.’
20
Is Ephraim My dear son?
Is he a delightful child?
Indeed, as often as I have spoken against him,
I certainly
still
remember him;
Therefore My heart yearns for him;
I will certainly have mercy on him,' declares the
Lord
.
King James Version
Chapter 31
7
For thus saith the
Lord
; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O
Lord
, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.
8
Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
9
They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
10
Hear the word of the
Lord
, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.
11
For the
Lord
hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.
12
Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the
Lord
, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
13
Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.
14
And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the
Lord
.
15
Thus saith the
Lord
; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.
16
Thus saith the
Lord
; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the
Lord
; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.
17
And there is hope in thine end, saith the
Lord
, that thy children shall come again to their own border.
18
I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the
Lord
my God.
19
Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.
20
Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the
Lord
.

Chapter 31
7
For this is what the
Lord
says:
Sing with joy for Jacob;
shout for the foremost of the nations!
Proclaim, praise, and say,
"
Lord
, save your people,
the remnant of Israel!"
8
Watch! I am going to bring them from the northern land.
I will gather them from remote regions of the earth —
the blind and the lame will be with them,
along with those who are pregnant and those about to give birth.
They will return here as a great assembly!
9
They will come weeping,
but I will bring them back with consolation.
I will lead them to wadis filled with water,
by a smooth way where they will not stumble,
for I am Israel’s Father,
and Ephraim is my firstborn.
10
Nations, hear the word of the
Lord
,
and tell it among the far off coasts and islands!
Say, "The one who scattered Israel will gather him.
He will watch over him as a shepherd guards his flock,
11
for the
Lord
has ransomed Jacob
and redeemed him from the power of one stronger than he."
12
They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion;
they will be radiant with joy
because of the
Lord
’s goodness,
because of the grain, the new wine, the fresh oil,
and because of the young of the flocks and herds.
Their life will be like an irrigated garden,
and they will no longer grow weak from hunger.
13
Then the young women will rejoice with dancing,
while young and old men rejoice together.
I will turn their mourning into joy,
give them consolation,
and bring happiness out of grief.
14
I will refresh the priests with an abundance,
and my people will be satisfied with my goodness. This is the
Lord
’s declaration.
15
This is what the
Lord
says:
A voice was heard in Ramah,
a lament with bitter weeping—
Rachel weeping for her children,
refusing to be comforted for her children
because they are no more.
16
This is what the
Lord
says:
Keep your voice from weeping
and your eyes from tears,
for the reward for your work will come— this is the
Lord
’s declaration— and your children will return from the enemy’s land.
17
There is hope for your future — this is the
Lord
’s declaration— and your children will return to their own territory.
18
I have surely heard Ephraim moaning,
"You disciplined me, and I have been disciplined
like an untrained calf.
Take me back, so that I can return,
for you,
Lord
, are my God.
19
After my return, I felt regret;
After I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief.
I was ashamed and humiliated
because I bore the disgrace of my youth."
20
Isn’t Ephraim a precious son to me,
a delightful child?
Whenever I speak against him,
I certainly still think about him.
Therefore, my inner being yearns for him;
I will truly have compassion on him. This is the
Lord
’s declaration.
New Living Translation
Chapter 31
7
Now this is what the
Lord
says:
'Sing with joy for Israel.
Shout for the greatest of nations!
Shout out with praise and joy:
‘Save your people, O
Lord
,
the remnant of Israel!’
8
For I will bring them from the north
and from the distant corners of the earth.
I will not forget the blind and lame,
the expectant mothers and women in labor.
A great company will return!
9
Tears of joy will stream down their faces,
and I will lead them home with great care.
They will walk beside quiet streams
and on smooth paths where they will not stumble.
For I am Israel’s father,
and Ephraim is my oldest child.
10
'Listen to this message from the
Lord
,
you nations of the world;
proclaim it in distant coastlands:
The
Lord
, who scattered his people,
will gather them and watch over them
as a shepherd does his flock.
11
For the
Lord
has redeemed Israel
from those too strong for them.
12
They will come home and sing songs of joy on the heights of Jerusalem.
They will be radiant because of the
Lord
’s good gifts —
the abundant crops of grain, new wine, and olive oil,
and the healthy flocks and herds.
Their life will be like a watered garden,
and all their sorrows will be gone.
13
The young women will dance for joy,
and the men — old and young — will join in the celebration.
I will turn their mourning into joy.
I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing.
14
The priests will enjoy abundance,
and my people will feast on my good gifts.
I, the
Lord
, have spoken!'
15
This is what the
Lord
says:
'A cry is heard in Ramah —
deep anguish and bitter weeping.
Rachel weeps for her children,
refusing to be comforted —
for her children are gone.'
16
But now this is what the
Lord
says:
'Do not weep any longer,
for I will reward you,' says the
Lord
.
'Your children will come back to you
from the distant land of the enemy.
17
There is hope for your future,' says the
Lord
.
'Your children will come again to their own land.
18
I have heard Israel saying,
‘You disciplined me severely,
like a calf that needs training for the yoke.
Turn me again to you and restore me,
for you alone are the
Lord
my God.
19
I turned away from God,
but then I was sorry.
I kicked myself for my stupidity!
I was thoroughly ashamed of all I did in my younger days.’
20
'Is not Israel still my son,
my darling child?' says the
Lord
.
'I often have to punish him,
but I still love him.
That’s why I long for him
and surely will have mercy on him.
