Haggai 2:10-16
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 2
10
On the twenty-fourth of the ninth
month,
in the second year of Darius, the word of the
Lord
came to Haggai the prophet, saying,
11
The
Lord
of armies says this: ‘Now ask the priests
for
a ruling:
12
If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches bread with this fold, or
touches
cooked food, wine, oil, or any
other
food, will it become holy?’?' And the priests answered, 'No.'
13
Then Haggai said, 'If one who is unclean from a corpse touches any of these
things,
will
the latter
become unclean?' And the priests answered, 'It will become unclean.'
14
Then Haggai responded and said, '?‘So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares the
Lord
, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean.
15
But now, do consider from this day onward: before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the
Lord
,
16
from that time
when
one came to a grain heap of twenty
measures,
there would be
only
ten;
and when
one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there would be
only
twenty.
King James Version
Chapter 2
10
In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the
Lord
by Haggai the prophet, saying,
11
Thus saith the
Lord
of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
12
If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
13
Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
14
Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the
Lord
; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
15
And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the
Lord
:
16
Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.

Chapter 2
10
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the
Lord
came to the prophet Haggai:
11
"This is what the
Lord
of Armies says: Ask the priests for a ruling.
12
If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?" The priests answered, "No."
13
Then Haggai asked, "If someone defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?" The priests answered, "It becomes defiled."
14
Then Haggai replied, "So is this people, and so is this nation before me—this is the
Lord
’s declaration. And so is every work of their hands; even what they offer there is defiled.
15
"Now from this day on, think carefully: Before one stone was placed on another in the
Lord
’s temple,
16
what state were you in? When someone came to a grain heap of twenty measures, it only amounted to ten; when one came to the winepress to dip fifty measures from the vat, it only amounted to twenty.
New Living Translation
Chapter 2
10
On December 18 of the second year of King Darius’s reign, the
Lord
sent this message to the prophet Haggai:
11
This is what the
Lord
of Heaven’s Armies says. Ask the priests this question about the law:
12
‘If one of you is carrying some meat from a holy sacrifice in his robes and his robe happens to brush against some bread or stew, wine or olive oil, or any other kind of food, will it also become holy?’' The priests replied, 'No.'
13
Then Haggai asked, 'If someone becomes ceremonially unclean by touching a dead person and then touches any of these foods, will the food be defiled?' And the priests answered, 'Yes.'
14
Then Haggai responded, 'That is how it is with this people and this nation, says the
Lord
. Everything they do and everything they offer is defiled by their sin.
15
Look at what was happening to you before you began to lay the foundation of the
Lord
’s Temple.
16
When you hoped for a twenty-bushel crop, you harvested only ten. When you expected to draw fifty gallons from the winepress, you found only twenty.

11
"This is what the
Lord
Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests what the law says:
12
If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?’ " The priests answered, "No."
13
Then Haggai said, "If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?" "Yes," the priests replied, "it becomes defiled."
14
Then Haggai said, " ‘So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,’ declares the
Lord
. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.
15
" ‘Now give careful thought to this from this day on —consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the
Lord
’s temple.
