Haggai 1:8-12
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
8
Go up to the mountains, bring wood, and rebuild the temple, that I may be pleased with it and be honored,' says the
Lord
.
9
You
start an ambitious project, but behold,
it comes
to little; when you bring
it
home, I blow it
away.
Why?' declares the
Lord
of armies. '
It is
because of My house which
remains
desolate, while each of you runs to his own house.
10
Therefore, because of you the sky has withheld its dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.
11
And I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on mankind, on cattle, and on all the products of the labor of your hands.'
12
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the
Lord
their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, just as the
Lord
their God had sent him. And the people showed reverence for the
Lord
.
King James Version
Chapter 1
8
Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the
Lord
.
9
Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the
Lord
of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
10
Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
11
And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.
12
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the
Lord
their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the
Lord
their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the
Lord
.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 1
8
Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house; and I will be pleased with it and be glorified," says the
Lord
.
9
"You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined it. Why?" This is the declaration of the
Lord
of Armies. "Because my house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.
10
So on your account,
the skies have withheld the dew
and the land its crops.
11
I have summoned a drought
on the fields and the hills,
on the grain, new wine, fresh oil,
and whatever the ground yields,
on man and animal,
and on all that your hands produce."
12
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the
Lord
their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the
Lord
their God had sent him. So the people feared the
Lord
.
New Living Translation
Chapter 1
8
Now go up into the hills, bring down timber, and rebuild my house. Then I will take pleasure in it and be honored, says the
Lord
.
9
You hoped for rich harvests, but they were poor. And when you brought your harvest home, I blew it away. Why? Because my house lies in ruins, says the
Lord
of Heaven’s Armies, while all of you are busy building your own fine houses.
10
It’s because of you that the heavens withhold the dew and the earth produces no crops.
11
I have called for a drought on your fields and hills — a drought to wither the grain and grapes and olive trees and all your other crops, a drought to starve you and your livestock and to ruin everything you have worked so hard to get.'
12
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of God’s people began to obey the message from the
Lord
their God. When they heard the words of the prophet Haggai, whom the
Lord
their God had sent, the people feared the
Lord
.
