Exodus 17:1-8
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 17
1
Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by stages from the wilderness of Sin, according to the command of the
Lord
, and camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.
2
So the people quarreled with Moses and said, 'Give us water so that we may drink!' And Moses said to them, 'Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the
Lord
?'
3
But the people were thirsty for water there; and they grumbled against Moses and said, 'Why is it that you have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?'
4
So Moses cried out to the
Lord
, saying, 'What am I to do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!'
5
Then the
Lord
said to Moses, 'Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
6
Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.' And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7
Then he named the place Massah and Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they tested the
Lord
, saying, 'Is the
Lord
among us, or not?'
8
Then Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim.
King James Version
Chapter 17
1
And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the
Lord
, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
2
Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the
Lord
?
3
And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4
And Moses cried unto the
Lord
, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.
5
And the
Lord
said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
6
Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7
And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the
Lord
, saying, Is the
Lord
among us, or not?
8
Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 17
1
The entire Israelite community left the Wilderness of Sin, moving from one place to the next according to the
Lord
’s command. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
2
So the people complained to Moses, "Give us water to drink." "Why are you complaining to me?" Moses replied to them. "Why are you testing the
Lord
?"
3
But the people thirsted there for water and grumbled against Moses. They said, "Why did you ever bring us up from Egypt to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?"
4
Then Moses cried out to the
Lord
, "What should I do with these people? In a little while they will stone me!"
5
The
Lord
answered Moses, "Go on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take the staff you struck the Nile with in your hand and go.
6
I am going to stand there in front of you on the rock at Horeb; when you hit the rock, water will come out of it and the people will drink." Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7
He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites complained, and because they tested the
Lord
, saying, "Is the
Lord
among us or not?"
8
At Rephidim, Amalek came and fought against Israel.
New Living Translation
Chapter 17
1
At the
Lord
’s command, the whole community of Israel left the wilderness of Sin and moved from place to place. Eventually they camped at Rephidim, but there was no water there for the people to drink.
2
So once more the people complained against Moses. 'Give us water to drink!' they demanded. 'Quiet!' Moses replied. 'Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the
Lord
?'
3
But tormented by thirst, they continued to argue with Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?'
4
Then Moses cried out to the
Lord
, 'What should I do with these people? They are ready to stone me!'
5
The
Lord
said to Moses, 'Walk out in front of the people. Take your staff, the one you used when you struck the water of the Nile, and call some of the elders of Israel to join you.
6
I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.' So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on.
7
Moses named the place Massah (which means 'test') and Meribah (which means 'arguing') because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the
Lord
by saying, 'Is the
Lord
here with us or not?'
8
While the people of Israel were still at Rephidim, the warriors of Amalek attacked them.

Chapter 17
1
The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the
Lord
commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
2
So they quarreled with Moses and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses replied, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the
Lord
to the test?"
3
But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?"
4
Then Moses cried out to the
Lord
, "What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me."
5
The
Lord
answered Moses, "Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
