Ecclesiastes 1:15-18
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
15
What is crooked cannot be straightened, and what is lacking cannot be counted.
16
I said to myself, 'Behold, I have magnified and increased wisdom more than all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my mind has observed a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.'
17
And I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know insanity and foolishness; I realized that this also is striving after wind.
18
Because in much wisdom there is much grief; and increasing knowledge
results in
increasing pain.
King James Version
Chapter 1
15
That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16
I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17
And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
18
For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 1
15
What is crooked cannot be straightened;
what is lacking cannot be counted.
16
I said to myself, "See, I have amassed wisdom far beyond all those who were over Jerusalem before me, and my mind has thoroughly grasped wisdom and knowledge."
17
I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly; I learned that this too is a pursuit of the wind.
18
For with much wisdom is much sorrow;
as knowledge increases, grief increases.
New Living Translation
Chapter 1
15
What is wrong cannot be made right.
What is missing cannot be recovered.
16
I said to myself, 'Look, I am wiser than any of the kings who ruled in Jerusalem before me. I have greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them.'
17
So I set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly. But I learned firsthand that pursuing all this is like chasing the wind.
18
The greater my wisdom, the greater my grief.
To increase knowledge only increases sorrow.
English Standard Version
Chapter 1
15
What is crooked cannot be made straight,
and what is lacking cannot be counted.
16
I said in my heart, "I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me, and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge."
17
And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind.
18
For in much wisdom is much vexation,
and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
New International Version
Chapter 1
15
What is crooked cannot be straightened;
what is lacking cannot be counted.
16
I said to myself, "Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge."
17
Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.
18
For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;
the more knowledge, the more grief.
New King James Version
Chapter 1
15
What is
crooked cannot be made straight,
And what is lacking cannot be numbered.
16
I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge.”
17
And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.
18
For in much wisdom
is
much grief,
And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
