Deuteronomy 8:16-20
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 8
16
In the wilderness
it was
He who fed you manna which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and in order to put you to the test, to do good for you in the end.
17
Otherwise, you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’
18
But you are to remember the
Lord
your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, in order to confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as
it is
this day.
19
And it shall come about, if you ever forget the
Lord
your God and follow other gods and serve and worship them, I testify against you today that you will certainly perish.
20
Like the nations that the
Lord
eliminates from you, so you shall perish, because you would not listen to the voice of the
Lord
your God.
King James Version
Chapter 8
16
Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
17
And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.
18
But thou shalt remember the
Lord
thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.
19
And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the
Lord
thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.
20
As the nations which the
Lord
destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the
Lord
your God.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 8
16
He fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers had not known, in order to humble and test you, so that in the end he might cause you to prosper.
17
You may say to yourself, ‘My power and my own ability have gained this wealth for me,’
18
but remember that the
Lord
your God gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm his covenant he swore to your fathers, as it is today.
19
If you ever forget the
Lord
your God and follow other gods to serve them and bow in worship to them, I testify against you today that you will perish.
20
Like the nations the
Lord
is about to destroy before you, you will perish if you do not obey the
Lord
your God.
New Living Translation
Chapter 8
16
He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good.
17
He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’
18
Remember the
Lord
your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.
19
But I assure you of this: If you ever forget the
Lord
your God and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed.
20
Just as the
Lord
has destroyed other nations in your path, you also will be destroyed if you refuse to obey the
Lord
your God.
English Standard Version
Chapter 8
16
who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.
17
Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’
18
You shall remember the
Lord
your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
19
And if you forget the
Lord
your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.
20
Like the nations that the
Lord
makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the
Lord
your God.
New International Version
Chapter 8
16
He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.
17
You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."
18
But remember the
Lord
your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
19
If you ever forget the
Lord
your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
20
Like the nations the
Lord
destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the
Lord
your God.
New King James Version
Chapter 8
16
who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end—
17
then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’
18
“And you shall remember the
Lord
your God, for
it is
He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as
it is
this day.
19
Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the
Lord
your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.
20
As the nations which the
Lord
destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the
Lord
your God.
