Deuteronomy 17:15-17
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 17
15
you shall in fact appoint a king over you whom the
Lord
your God chooses.
One
from among your countrymen you shall appoint as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves,
anyone
who is not your countryman.
16
In any case, he is not to acquire many horses for himself, nor shall he make the people return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the
Lord
has said to you, ‘You shall never again return that way.’
17
And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, so that his heart does not turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.
King James Version
Chapter 17
15
Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the
Lord
thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
16
But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the
Lord
hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
17
Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 17
15
you are to appoint over you the king the
Lord
your God chooses. Appoint a king from your brothers. You are not to set a foreigner over you, or one who is not of your people.
16
However, he must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire many horses, for the
Lord
has told you, ‘You are never to go back that way again.’
17
He must not acquire many wives for himself so that his heart won’t go astray. He must not acquire very large amounts of silver and gold for himself.
New Living Translation
Chapter 17
15
If this happens, be sure to select as king the man the
Lord
your God chooses. You must appoint a fellow Israelite; he may not be a foreigner.
16
The king must not build up a large stable of horses for himself or send his people to Egypt to buy horses, for the
Lord
has told you, ‘You must never return to Egypt.’
17
The king must not take many wives for himself, because they will turn his heart away from the
Lord
. And he must not accumulate large amounts of wealth in silver and gold for himself.
English Standard Version
Chapter 17
15
you may indeed set a king over you whom the
Lord
your God will choose. One from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.
16
Only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the
Lord
has said to you, ‘You shall never return that way again.’
17
And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.
New International Version
Chapter 17
15
be sure to appoint over you a king the
Lord
your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite.
16
The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the
Lord
has told you, "You are not to go back that way again."
17
He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.
New King James Version
Chapter 17
15
you shall surely set a king over you whom the
Lord
your God chooses;
one
from among your brethren you shall set as king over you; you may not set a foreigner over you, who
is
not your brother.
16
But he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, for the
Lord
has said to you, ‘You shall not return that way again.’
17
Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself.
