Acts 5:38-41
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 5
38
And
so
in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, for if the source of this plan or movement is men, it will be overthrown;
39
but if the source is God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.'
40
They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and
then
released them.
41
So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for
His
name.
King James Version
Chapter 5
38
And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39
But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
40
And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41
And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 5
38
So in the present case, I tell you, stay away from these men and leave them alone. For if this plan or this work is of human origin, it will fail;
39
but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even be found fighting against God." They were persuaded by him.
40
After they called in the apostles and had them flogged, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.
41
Then they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to be treated shamefully on behalf of the Name.
New Living Translation
Chapter 5
38
So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown.
39
But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!'
40
The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.
41
The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.
English Standard Version
Chapter 5
38
So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail;
39
but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!" So they took his advice,
40
and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41
Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.
New International Version
Chapter 5
38
Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.
39
But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."
40
His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41
The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.
New King James Version
Chapter 5
38
And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;
39
but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God.”
40
And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten
them,
they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41
So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.
