Acts 23:16-24
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 23
16
But the son of Paul’s sister heard about their ambush, and he came and entered the barracks and told Paul.
17
Paul called one of the centurions to himself and said, 'Take this young man to the commander, for he has something to report to him.'
18
So he took him and led him to the commander and *said, 'Paul the prisoner called me over to him and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.'
19
The commander took him by the hand, and stepping aside,
began
to inquire of him privately, 'What is it that you have to report to me?'
20
And he said, 'The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down tomorrow to the Council, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more thoroughly about him.
21
So do not listen to them, for more than forty of them are in hiding to ambush him, and these men have put themselves under an oath not to eat or drink until they kill him; and now they are ready and waiting for assurance from you.'
22
Then the commander let the young man go, instructing him, 'Tell no one that you have notified me of these things.'
23
And he called to him two of the centurions and said, 'Get two hundred soldiers ready by the third hour of the night to proceed to Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen.'
24
They were
also to provide mounts to put Paul on and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
King James Version
Chapter 23
16
And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.
17
Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.
18
So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.
19
Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?
20
And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.
21
But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.
22
So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.
23
And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;
24
And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 23
16
But the son of Paul’s sister, hearing about their ambush, came and entered the barracks and reported it to Paul.
17
Paul called one of the centurions and said, "Take this young man to the commander, because he has something to report to him."
18
So he took him, brought him to the commander, and said, "The prisoner Paul called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, because he has something to tell you."
19
The commander took him by the hand, led him aside, and inquired privately, "What is it you have to report to me?"
20
"The Jews," he said, "have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, as though they are going to hold a somewhat more careful inquiry about him.
21
Don’t let them persuade you, because there are more than forty of them lying in ambush—men who have bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, waiting for your consent."
22
So the commander dismissed the young man and instructed him, "Don’t tell anyone that you have informed me about this."
23
He summoned two of his centurions and said, "Get two hundred soldiers ready with seventy cavalry and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight.
24
Also provide mounts for Paul to ride and bring him safely to Felix the governor."
New Living Translation
Chapter 23
16
But Paul’s nephew — his sister’s son — heard of their plan and went to the fortress and told Paul.
17
Paul called for one of the Roman officers and said, 'Take this young man to the commander. He has something important to tell him.'
18
So the officer did, explaining, 'Paul, the prisoner, called me over and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.'
19
The commander took his hand, led him aside, and asked, 'What is it you want to tell me?'
20
Paul’s nephew told him, 'Some Jews are going to ask you to bring Paul before the high council tomorrow, pretending they want to get some more information.
21
But don’t do it! There are more than forty men hiding along the way ready to ambush him. They have vowed not to eat or drink anything until they have killed him. They are ready now, just waiting for your consent.'
22
Don’t let anyone know you told me this,' the commander warned the young man.
23
Then the commander called two of his officers and ordered, 'Get 200 soldiers ready to leave for Caesarea at nine o’clock tonight. Also take 200 spearmen and 70 mounted troops.
24
Provide horses for Paul to ride, and get him safely to Governor Felix.'
English Standard Version
Chapter 23
16
Now the son of Paul 's sister heard of their ambush, so he went and entered the barracks and told Paul.
17
Paul called one of the centurions and said, "Take this young man to the tribune, for he has something to tell him."
18
So he took him and brought him to the tribune and said, "Paul the prisoner called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, as he has something to say to you."
19
The tribune took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, "What is it that you have to tell me?"
20
And he said, "The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more closely about him.
21
But do not be persuaded by them, for more than forty of their men are lying in ambush for him, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat nor drink till they have killed him. And now they are ready, waiting for your consent."
22
So the tribune dismissed the young man, charging him, "Tell no one that you have informed me of these things."
23
Then he called two of the centurions and said, "Get ready two hundred soldiers, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go as far as Caesarea at the third hour of the night.
24
Also provide mounts for Paul to ride and bring him safely to Felix the governor."
New International Version
Chapter 23
16
But when the son of Paul’s sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul.
17
Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, "Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him."
18
So he took him to the commander. The centurion said, "Paul, the prisoner, sent for me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you."
19
The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside and asked, "What is it you want to tell me?"
20
He said: "Some Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul before the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about him.
21
Don’t give in to them, because more than forty of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request."
22
The commander dismissed the young man with this warning: "Don’t tell anyone that you have reported this to me."
23
Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, "Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight.
24
Provide horses for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix."

But do not yield to them, for more than forty of them lie in wait for him, men who have bound themselves by an oath that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him; and now they are ready, waiting for the promise from you.”
