2 Timothy 2:13-19
New American Standard Bible
14Remind them of these things, and solemnly exhort them in the presence of God not to dispute about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the listeners.
15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
16But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,
17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
18men who have gone astray from the truth, claiming that the resurrection has already taken place; and they are jeopardizing the faith of some.
19Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal: 'The Lord knows those who are His;' and, 'Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to keep away from wickedness.'
King James Version
14Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
17And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
18Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
Christian Standard Bible
14Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to fight about words. This is useless and leads to the ruin of those who listen.
15Be diligent to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth.
16Avoid irreverent and empty speech, since those who engage in it will produce even more godlessness,
17and their teaching will spread like gangrene. Hymenaeus and Philetus are among them.
18They have departed from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and are ruining the faith of some.
19Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, bearing this inscription: The Lord knows those who are his, and let everyone who calls on the name of the Lord turn away from wickedness.
New Living Translation
15Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.
16Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior.
17This kind of talk spreads like cancer, as in the case of Hymenaeus and Philetus.
18They have left the path of truth, claiming that the resurrection of the dead has already occurred; in this way, they have turned some people away from the faith.
English Standard Version
14Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers.
15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
16But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness,
17and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
18who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some.
19But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
New International Version
14Keep reminding God's people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
16Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
17Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
18who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.
19Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: 'The Lord knows those who are his,' and, 'Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.'
New King James Version
14Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.
15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.
17And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort,
18who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.
19Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
