1 Samuel 18:1-5
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 18
1
Now it came about, when he had finished speaking to Saul, that Jonathan committed himself to David, and Jonathan loved him as himself.
2
And Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father’s house.
3
Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.
4
Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his military gear, including his sword, his bow, and his belt.
5
And David went
into battle
wherever Saul sent him,
and always
achieved success; so Saul put him in charge of the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
King James Version
Chapter 18
1
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2
And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
3
Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
4
And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
5
And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
Christian Standard Bible

Saul kept David with him from that day on and did not let him return to his father’s house.
3
Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as much as himself.
4
Then Jonathan removed the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his military tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt.
5
David marched out with the army and was successful in everything Saul sent him to do. Saul put him in command of the fighting men, which pleased all the people and Saul’s servants as well.
New Living Translation
Chapter 18
1
After David had finished talking with Saul, he met Jonathan, the king’s son. There was an immediate bond between them, for Jonathan loved David.
2
From that day on Saul kept David with him and wouldn’t let him return home.
3
And Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, because he loved him as he loved himself.
4
Jonathan sealed the pact by taking off his robe and giving it to David, together with his tunic, sword, bow, and belt.
5
Whatever Saul asked David to do, David did it successfully. So Saul made him a commander over the men of war, an appointment that was welcomed by the people and Saul’s officers alike.
