Chapter 17

53Then the sons of Israel returned from their close pursuit of the Philistines, and plundered their camps. 54And David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his weapons in his tent.
55Now when Saul had seen David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of the army, 'Abner, whose son is this young man?' And Abner said, 'By your life, O king, I do not know.' 56And the king said, 'You then, ask whose son the youth is.' 57So when David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head in his hand. 58Then Saul said to him, 'Whose son are you, young man?' And David answered, 'I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.'

53And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. 54And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
55And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. 56And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.
57And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.

55When Saul had seen David going out to confront the Philistine, he asked Abner the commander of the army, "Whose son is this youth, Abner?" "Your Majesty, as surely as you live, I don’t know," Abner replied.
56The king said, "Find out whose son this young man is!"
57When David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head still in his hand.
58Saul said to him, "Whose son are you, young man?" "The son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem," David answered.

55As Saul watched David go out to fight the Philistine, he asked Abner, the commander of his army, 'Abner, whose son is this young man?' 'I really don’t know,' Abner declared.
56Well, find out who he is!' the king told him.
57As soon as David returned from killing Goliath, Abner brought him to Saul with the Philistine’s head still in his hand.
58Tell me about your father, young man,' Saul said. And David replied, 'His name is Jesse, and we live in Bethlehem.'
