1 Samuel 17:40-42
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 17
40
Then he took his staff in his hand and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag which he had, that is, in
his
shepherd’s pouch, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.
41
Then the Philistine came and approached David, with the shield-bearer in front of him.
42
When the Philistine looked and saw David, he was contemptuous of him; for he was
only
a youth, and reddish, with a handsome appearance.
King James Version
Chapter 17
40
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
41
And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
42
And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 17
40
Instead, he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pouch, in his shepherd’s bag. Then, with his sling in his hand, he approached the Philistine.
41
The Philistine came closer and closer to David, with the shield-bearer in front of him.
42
When the Philistine looked and saw David, he despised him because he was just a youth, healthy and handsome.
New Living Translation
Chapter 17
40
He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.
41
Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him,
42
sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy.
English Standard Version
Chapter 17
40
Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd 's pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.
41
And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him.
42
And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance.
New International Version
Chapter 17
40
Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
41
Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David.
42
He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him.
New King James Version
Chapter 17
40
Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine.
41
So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield
went
before him.
42
And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was
only
a youth, ruddy and good-looking.
