1 Samuel 17:32-37
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 17
32
And David said to Saul, 'May no one’s heart fail on account of him; your servant will go and fight this Philistine!'
33
But Saul said to David, 'You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight him; for you are
only
a youth, while he has been a warrior since his youth.'
34
But David said to Saul, 'Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a sheep from the flock,
35
I went out after it and attacked it, and rescued
the sheep
from its mouth; and when it rose up against me, I grabbed
it
by its mane and struck it and killed it.
36
Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.'
37
And David said, 'The
Lord
who saved me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear, He will save me from the hand of this Philistine.' So Saul said to David, 'Go, and may the
Lord
be with you.'
King James Version
Chapter 17
32
And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35
And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36
Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37
David said moreover, The
Lord
that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the
Lord
be with thee.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 17
32
David said to Saul, "Don’t let anyone be discouraged by him; your servant will go and fight this Philistine!"
33
But Saul replied, "You can’t go fight this Philistine. You’re just a youth, and he’s been a warrior since he was young."
34
David answered Saul: "Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock,
35
I went after it, struck it down, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it.
36
Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God."
37
Then David said, "The
Lord
who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and may the
Lord
be with you."
New Living Translation
Chapter 17
32
Don’t worry about this Philistine,' David told Saul. 'I’ll go fight him!'
33
Don’t be ridiculous!' Saul replied. 'There’s no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly win! You’re only a boy, and he’s been a man of war since his youth.'
34
But David persisted. 'I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,' he said. 'When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock,
35
I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death.
36
I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!
37
The
Lord
who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!' Saul finally consented. 'All right, go ahead,' he said. 'And may the
Lord
be with you!'
