1 Samuel 17:13-19
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 17
13
The three older sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who had gone into the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and second to him, Abinadab, and the third, Shammah.
14
So David was the youngest. Now the three oldest followed Saul,
15
but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s flock at Bethlehem.
16
And the Philistine came forward morning and evening, and took his stand for forty days.
17
Then Jesse said to his son David, 'Take now for your brothers an ephah of this roasted grain and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to your brothers.
18
Bring also these ten slices of cheese to the commander of
their
thousand, and look into the well-being of your brothers and bring back confirmation from them.
19
For Saul and they and all the men of Israel are in the Valley of Elah, fighting the Philistines.'
King James Version
Chapter 17
13
And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
14
And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
15
But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
16
And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
17
And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;
18
And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
19
Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 17
13
Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war, and their names were Eliab, the firstborn, Abinadab, the next, and Shammah, the third,
14
and David was the youngest. The three oldest had followed Saul,
15
but David kept going back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s flock in Bethlehem.
16
Every morning and evening for forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand.
17
One day Jesse had told his son David: "Take this half-bushel of roasted grain along with these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp.
18
Also take these ten portions of cheese to the field commander. Check on the well-being of your brothers and bring a confirmation from them.
19
They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah fighting with the Philistines."
New Living Translation
Chapter 17
13
Jesse’s three oldest sons — Eliab, Abinadab, and Shimea — had already joined Saul’s army to fight the Philistines.
14
David was the youngest son. David’s three oldest brothers stayed with Saul’s army,
15
but David went back and forth so he could help his father with the sheep in Bethlehem.
16
For forty days, every morning and evening, the Philistine champion strutted in front of the Israelite army.
17
One day Jesse said to David, 'Take this basket of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread, and carry them quickly to your brothers.
18
And give these ten cuts of cheese to their captain. See how your brothers are getting along, and bring back a report on how they are doing. '
19
David’s brothers were with Saul and the Israelite army at the valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.
