1 Samuel 14:41-44
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 14
41
Therefore, Saul said to the
Lord
, the God of Israel, 'Give a perfect
lot.
' And Jonathan and Saul were selected by lot, but the people were exonerated.
42
Then Saul said, 'Cast
lots
between me and my son Jonathan.' And Jonathan was selected by lot.
43
So Saul said to Jonathan, 'Tell me what you have done.' And Jonathan told him, and said, 'I did indeed taste a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am, I must die!'
44
And Saul said, 'May God do the same
to me
and more also, for you shall certainly die, Jonathan!'
King James Version
Chapter 14
41
Therefore Saul said unto the
Lord
God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
42
And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.
43
Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
44
And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 14
41
So Saul said to the
Lord
, "God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant today? If the unrighteousness is in me or in my son Jonathan,
Lord
God of Israel, give Urim; but if the fault is in your people Israel, give Thummim." Jonathan and Saul were selected, and the troops were cleared of the charge.
42
Then Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan," and Jonathan was selected.
43
Saul commanded him, "Tell me what you did." Jonathan told him, "I tasted a little honey with the end of the staff I was carrying. I am ready to die!"
44
Saul declared to him, "May God punish me and do so severely if you do not die, Jonathan!"
New Living Translation
Chapter 14
41
Then Saul prayed, 'O
Lord
, God of Israel, please show us who is guilty and who is innocent. ' Then they cast sacred lots, and Jonathan and Saul were chosen as the guilty ones, and the people were declared innocent.
42
Then Saul said, 'Now cast lots again and choose between me and Jonathan.' And Jonathan was shown to be the guilty one.
43
Tell me what you have done,' Saul demanded of Jonathan. 'I tasted a little honey,' Jonathan admitted. 'It was only a little bit on the end of my stick. Does that deserve death?'
44
Yes, Jonathan,' Saul said, 'you must die! May God strike me and even kill me if you do not die for this.'
English Standard Version
Chapter 14
41
Therefore Saul said, "O
Lord
God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O

42
Then Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan." And Jonathan was taken.
43

44
And Saul said, "God do so to me and more also; you shall surely die, Jonathan."
