1 Samuel 14:39-42
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 14
39
For as the
Lord
lives, who saves Israel, even if it is in my son Jonathan, he shall assuredly die!' But not one of all the people answered him.
40
Then he said to all Israel, 'You shall be on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will be on the other side.' And the people said to Saul, 'Do what seems good to you.'
41
Therefore, Saul said to the
Lord
, the God of Israel, 'Give a perfect
lot.
' And Jonathan and Saul were selected by lot, but the people were exonerated.
42
Then Saul said, 'Cast
lots
between me and my son Jonathan.' And Jonathan was selected by lot.
King James Version
Chapter 14
39
For, as the
Lord
liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
40
Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
41
Therefore Saul said unto the
Lord
God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
42
And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 14
39
As surely as the
Lord
lives who saves Israel, even if it is because of my son Jonathan, he must die!" Not one of the troops answered him.
40
So he said to all Israel, "You will be on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will be on the other side." And the troops replied, "Do whatever you want."
41
So Saul said to the
Lord
, "God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant today? If the unrighteousness is in me or in my son Jonathan,
Lord
God of Israel, give Urim; but if the fault is in your people Israel, give Thummim." Jonathan and Saul were selected, and the troops were cleared of the charge.
42
Then Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan," and Jonathan was selected.
New Living Translation
Chapter 14
39
I vow by the name of the
Lord
who rescued Israel that the sinner will surely die, even if it is my own son Jonathan!' But no one would tell him what the trouble was.
40
Then Saul said, 'Jonathan and I will stand over here, and all of you stand over there.' And the people responded to Saul, 'Whatever you think is best.'
41
Then Saul prayed, 'O
Lord
, God of Israel, please show us who is guilty and who is innocent. ' Then they cast sacred lots, and Jonathan and Saul were chosen as the guilty ones, and the people were declared innocent.
42
Then Saul said, 'Now cast lots again and choose between me and Jonathan.' And Jonathan was shown to be the guilty one.

41
Therefore Saul said, "O

God of Israel, why have you not answered your servant this day? If this guilt is in me or in Jonathan my son, O
Lord
, God of Israel, give Urim. But if this guilt is in your people Israel, give Thummim." And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.
42
Then Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan." And Jonathan was taken.

Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son." And Jonathan was taken.
