1 Samuel 14:16-24
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 14
16
Now Saul’s watchmen in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude dissolved; they went here
and there.
17
So Saul said to the people who
were
with him, 'Look carefully now and see who has left us.' And when they had looked, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not
there.
18
Then Saul said to Ahijah, 'Bring the ark of God here.' For at that time the ark of God was with the sons of Israel.
19
While Saul talked to the priest, the commotion in the camp of the Philistines continued and increased; so Saul said to the priest, 'Withdraw your hand.'
20
Then Saul and all the people who
were
with him rallied and came to the battle; and behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow
Philistine, and there was
very great confusion.
21
Now the Hebrews
who
were with the Philistines previously, who went up with them all around in the camp, even they also
returned
to be with the Israelites who
were
with Saul and Jonathan.
22
When all the men of Israel who had kept themselves hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, they also closely pursued them in the battle.
23
So the
Lord
saved Israel that day, and the battle spread beyond Beth-aven.
24
Now the men of Israel were hard-pressed on that day, for Saul had put the people under oath, saying, 'Cursed be the man who eats food before evening, and
before
I have avenged myself on my enemies.' So none of the people tasted food.
King James Version
Chapter 14
16
And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.
17
Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
18
And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.
19
And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
20
And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.
21
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.
22
Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.
23
So the
Lord
saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.
24
And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

Chapter 14
16
When Saul’s watchmen in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, they saw the panicking troops scattering in every direction.
17
So Saul said to the troops with him, "Call the roll and determine who has left us." They called the roll and saw that Jonathan and his armor-bearer were gone.
18
Saul told Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God," for it was with the Israelites at that time.
19
While Saul spoke to the priest, the panic in the Philistine camp increased in intensity. So Saul said to the priest, "Stop what you’re doing."
20
Saul and all the troops with him assembled and marched to the battle, and there the Philistines were, fighting against each other in great confusion!
21
There were Hebrews from the area who had gone earlier into the camp to join the Philistines, but even they joined the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
22
When all the Israelite men who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they also joined Saul and Jonathan in the battle.
23
So the
Lord
saved Israel that day. The battle extended beyond Beth-aven,
24
and the men of Israel were worn out that day, for Saul had placed the troops under an oath: "The man who eats food before evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies is cursed." So none of the troops tasted any food.

Chapter 14
16
Saul’s lookouts in Gibeah of Benjamin saw a strange sight — the vast army of Philistines began to melt away in every direction.
17
Call the roll and find out who’s missing,' Saul ordered. And when they checked, they found that Jonathan and his armor bearer were gone.
18
Then Saul shouted to Ahijah, 'Bring the ephod here!' For at that time Ahijah was wearing the ephod in front of the Israelites.
19
But while Saul was talking to the priest, the confusion in the Philistine camp grew louder and louder. So Saul said to the priest, 'Never mind; let’s get going!'
20
Then Saul and all his men rushed out to the battle and found the Philistines killing each other. There was terrible confusion everywhere.
21
Even the Hebrews who had previously gone over to the Philistine army revolted and joined in with Saul, Jonathan, and the rest of the Israelites.
22
Likewise, the men of Israel who were hiding in the hill country of Ephraim joined the chase when they saw the Philistines running away.
23
So the
Lord
saved Israel that day, and the battle continued to rage even beyond Beth-aven.
24
Now the men of Israel were pressed to exhaustion that day, because Saul had placed them under an oath, saying, 'Let a curse fall on anyone who eats before evening — before I have full revenge on my enemies.' So no one ate anything all day,

16
Saul’s lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions.

19
While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."

Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit.

So on that day the

Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, "Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!" So none of the troops tasted food.
