1 Samuel 13:9-13
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 13
9
So Saul said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.' And he offered the burnt offering.
10
But as soon as he finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him
and
to greet him.
11
But Samuel said, 'What have you done?' And Saul said, 'Since I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come at the appointed time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Michmash,
12
I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not asked the favor of the
Lord
.’ So I worked up the courage and offered the burnt offering.'
13
But Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted foolishly! You have not kept the commandment of the
Lord
your God, which He commanded you, for the
Lord
would now have established your kingdom over Israel forever.
King James Version
Chapter 13
9
And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
10
And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11
And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
12
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the
Lord
: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
13
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the
Lord
thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the
Lord
have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

10
Just as he finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel arrived. So Saul went out to greet him,
11
and Samuel asked, "What have you done?" Saul answered, "When I saw that the troops were deserting me and you didn’t come within the appointed days and the Philistines were gathering at Michmash,
12
I thought, ‘The Philistines will now descend on me at Gilgal, and I haven’t sought the
Lord
’s favor.’ So I forced myself to offer the burnt offering."
13
Samuel said to Saul, "You have been foolish. You have not kept the command the
Lord
your God gave you. It was at this time that the
Lord
would have permanently established your reign over Israel,

Chapter 13
9
So he demanded, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings!' And Saul sacrificed the burnt offering himself.
10
Just as Saul was finishing with the burnt offering, Samuel arrived. Saul went out to meet and welcome him,
11
but Samuel said, 'What is this you have done?' Saul replied, 'I saw my men scattering from me, and you didn’t arrive when you said you would, and the Philistines are at Micmash ready for battle.
12
So I said, ‘The Philistines are ready to march against us at Gilgal, and I haven’t even asked for the
Lord
’s help!’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering myself before you came.'
13
How foolish!' Samuel exclaimed. 'You have not kept the command the
Lord
your God gave you. Had you kept it, the
Lord
would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.
