I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not asked the favor of the
Lord
.’ So I worked up the courage and offered the burnt offering.'

But Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted foolishly! You have not kept the commandment of the
Lord
your God, which He commanded you, for the
Lord
would now have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the
Lord
: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the

thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the
Lord
have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
