1 John 3:16-17
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 3
16
We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers
and sisters.
17
But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother
or sister
in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him?
King James Version
Chapter 3
16
Hereby perceive we the love
of God
, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down
our
lives for the brethren.
17
But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels
of compassion
from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 3
16
This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
17
If anyone has this world's goods and sees a fellow believer in need but withholds compassion from him--how does God's love reside in him?
New Living Translation
Chapter 3
16
We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.
17
If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion — how can God’s love be in that person?
English Standard Version
Chapter 3
16
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
17
But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?
New International Version
Chapter 3
16
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
17
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
New King James Version
Chapter 3
16
By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down
our
lives for the brethren.
17
But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
