1 John 3:12-17
New American Standard Bible
13Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
14We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.
15Everyone who hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.
16We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters.
17But whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God remain in him?
King James Version
Chapter 3
12Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. 13Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
Christian Standard Bible
13Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
14We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.
15Everyone who hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16This is how we have come to know love: He laid down his life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
17If anyone has this world's goods and sees a fellow believer in need but withholds compassion from him--how does God's love reside in him?
New Living Translation
Chapter 3
12We must not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because Cain had been doing what was evil, and his brother had been doing what was righteous. 13So don’t be surprised, dear brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.English Standard Version
